Oliver Laric
Wednesday, October 28, 6:30 p.m.
Neuberger Museum
“Versions”
Oliver Laric is a Berlin-based artist who works primarily online. His work often appropriates or borrows from existing web content, and gives back to the internet by re-posting the remixed material within its native environment. Among his best-known works are 787 Cliparts, an overly ambitious video animation creating movement out of still images; 50 50, in which fifty clips of YouTube users are remixed together in a feat of continuity editing; and Touch My Body, an edit in which all but the visage of Mariah Carey’s body in this eponymous music video is digitally replaced with a “green screen” so that viewers can post their own chroma-keyed remixes to YouTube. In these and other projects, Laric’s art projects break down the perceived barrier between high culture and contemporary digital visual culture, initiating dialogue between the two and their respective participants.
Laric has exhibited internationally at the 2009 Venice Biennale, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, Kunsthaus Graz, PPOW Gallery (NY), Seventeen Gallery (London), and numerous other venues. Laric studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he met Aleksandra Domanovic, Christoph Priglinger, and Georg Schnitzer, his fellow co-founders of VVORK, a curatorial entity that manages a highly-regarded art blog, organizes special print publication projects, and has curated exhibitions worldwide.
